Your team shipped something in six weeks that would have taken six months two years ago. It looks polished, the demo went well, and a major enterprise deal is on the table. This is exactly the moment to ask whether you have built a product or a prototype with good lighting.
Vibe coding, the practice of directing AI tools to generate functional software through natural-language prompts rather than hand-written code, has genuinely compressed what is possible for small teams. A solo founder can assemble a working application in a weekend. A startup can reach MVP in weeks. The productivity gains are real and they are not going away. But the traps hidden inside that speed are real too, and they tend to surface at the worst possible moment: during due diligence, under real user load, or on the day your security team runs its first audit.
What Does "Working" Actually Mean at Scale?
Working and safe are not the same word. Executives need to stop treating them as synonyms.
Research suggests that nearly half of AI-generated code contains meaningful security vulnerabilities. The mechanisms vary. AI models reproduce patterns from their training data, including patterns that encode known flaws. They optimize for code that passes the test in front of them, not for code that holds up under adversarial conditions, unexpected traffic volumes, or edge cases no one thought to specify in a prompt. A vibe-coded product can pass every demo, every internal QA check, and every early user session, and still be fundamentally unprepared for what production actually looks like.
This is not a knock on the engineers who built it. It is a structural reality of the technology. The problem is not effort or intent. The problem is that "it runs" and "it is ready to scale" describe two entirely different states of readiness.
Where Do the Hidden Costs Actually Hide?
The rebuild conversation is one of the most expensive conversations an executive can have, and it almost always happens at the wrong time.
A product catches the attention of a serious enterprise buyer. The security questionnaire arrives. Suddenly, architectural decisions that seemed like reasonable shortcuts six months ago are blockers. Or a funding round closes, user load spikes, and infrastructure that served a few hundred users buckles under thousands. The cost of addressing these problems after a deal or a launch is not just technical. It is relational. It is reputational. It resets timelines that investors were counting on.
The irony is that vibe coding itself is not the root issue. Speed is not the root issue. The issue is the gap between the questions the product was built to answer and the questions the market will eventually ask it. Closing that gap deliberately, before it closes on you, is a strategic decision, not a technical one.
What Should Executives Ask Before Scaling?
The right questions are not about the technology stack. They are about assumptions.
Ask who reviewed the code for security, not just whether it was tested. Ask what happens when five times the expected number of users hit the system simultaneously. Ask where the data lives, who can access it, and whether that answer would satisfy a CISO at a Fortune 500 company or a HIPAA auditor. Ask what the product was never designed to do, because that is usually the first thing your next customer will ask it to do.
These questions are not meant to slow things down. They are meant to surface decisions that have already been made, implicitly, inside every AI-generated function call, so that leadership can make them explicitly before the stakes get higher.
How Do You Move From Prototype to Production Without Rebuilding From Scratch?
The answer is not to throw away what works. It is to understand what you actually have.
That requires honest assessment: a genuine audit of what the AI built, where the seams are, what security assumptions were baked in, and what the architecture can absorb as the product grows. From that baseline, the path forward becomes a deliberate plan rather than a crisis response. We saw this play out when we helped Apria take a proof-of-concept DME ordering platform and build it into a revenue-generating product with a 95% first-time submission success rate. The work was not about starting over. It was about knowing where the foundation was sound and where it needed reinforcement before real volume arrived. You can read more about that work at our Apria case study.
AI can accelerate a remarkable amount of what comes next. Prototyping, iteration, front-end generation, documentation, testing scaffolding: the tools are genuinely useful across all of it. What AI cannot replace is the judgment required to decide what to build, in what order, with what safeguards, and with what user in mind.
That judgment is still a human job. Right now, it is one of the most valuable investments an executive team can make.
If you are sitting on a vibe-coded product that worked beautifully last quarter and is now facing a moment of real scale, we should talk.
