The floor just moved. Generating a production-quality set of UI screens used to require days of skilled design work. Today, a product manager with a well-crafted prompt can produce something that looks polished in under an hour. That is not a threat to great design. It is an obituary for average design.

The implication for your business is more urgent than most executive teams have acknowledged.

What Happens When Polished UI Costs Nothing?

When a capability becomes cheap, it stops being a differentiator. That is basic economics, and it is exactly what is happening to visual design right now.

AI tools like v0, Galileo, and Figma's generative features can now produce aesthetically coherent screens at a speed and volume that no human design team can match on cost alone. This might sound like good news for the industry. In one sense, it is. The floor is higher. Anyone can ship a credible-looking product faster than ever. But when the floor rises and the ceiling stays the same, the space where you can differentiate narrows considerably.

The result is predictable: a market converging on the same design vocabulary. The same card layouts, the same gradient accents, the same responsive grids, the same sans-serif confidence. Most products cannot tell you how they escape this template because they have not thought hard enough about what would make them worth escaping toward.

UX researchers have started calling this "vibe design," the AI-assisted generation of interfaces that feel complete but are built on aesthetic pattern-matching rather than user insight. The screens look right. The experience does not work right.

Why Does Vibe Design Backfire?

The dangerous part is the lag. AI-generated UI can carry a product through a demo, a sales cycle, sometimes through early onboarding. The polish earns initial confidence. What it cannot do is retain users who eventually discover that the interface does not fit how they think, what they need, or what they are trying to accomplish.

The Nielsen Norman Group's 2026 State of UX report captures this tension clearly: AI is raising the floor for surface-level quality while widening the gap between products built on research and products built on imitation. Users feel that gap even when they cannot name it.

Retention curves do not lie. Churn rarely arrives with a diagnostic report, but it almost always reflects the distance between what a product promised and what the experience actually delivered. Visual polish does not close that gap. Research does.

What Does Real Differentiation Look Like Now?

If polished UI is the floor, differentiation lives above it. And above it is where research-driven design has always operated.

Understanding why users abandon a flow, not just that they do. Knowing the job a user is actually trying to accomplish, not what the feature spec assumes. Designing for the emotional arc of an experience, not just the functional steps. These are not soft competencies. They are the capabilities that produce measurable business outcomes.

When we worked with Choice Hotels to redesign their booking experience, the goal was not to make screens look better. It was to understand where and why users were leaving, then design a flow that matched how people actually make travel decisions. The result was a 50% reduction in booking churn. That kind of outcome does not come from a prompt. It comes from research, structured inquiry, and design decisions made in direct response to real human behavior.

That is the moat.

How Should You Think About Design Investment Now?

The AI wave is a forcing function. It strips competitive value from adequate design and concentrates it at the top. The executive question is no longer whether to invest in design. It is whether to invest in design that can actually differentiate, or design that will blend into the background within six months.

Research-driven UX is not a cost center that makes things look better. It is a growth lever that closes the gap between what your product promises and what users actually experience. In a market where every competitor can ship a polished-looking product in weeks, the experience quality built through genuine user insight is one of the few things that cannot be generated.

Average is now free. The question is what you build above it.
