The not-so-secret trick to improving user engagement is this: give people what they want, when they want it. That means designing with a constant focus on user needs, anticipating what comes next, and providing the right context at the right moment.

What Is Causing Low User Engagement?

We get this question from our clients all the time. People aren't logging in to their app enough. They're not using the fancy new features that got built. Users don't seem to know how to engage with the product, or they're not taking advantage of upgrade options.

The problem usually isn't the product itself. It's that product teams have lost their way in a dense fog of competing business priorities and urgent feature requests. When that happens, user needs stop driving decisions -- and engagement drops.

What Are the Three Principles of User Engagement?

  1. Prioritise Jobs-To-Be-Done -- Understand the real tasks your users are trying to accomplish, and design around those.
  2. Anticipate User Needs -- Get ahead of what users need next before they have to ask for it.
  3. Provide the Right Context -- Deliver the right information, prompt, or feature at the moment it's actually useful.

Each principle builds on the last. Together, they form a foundation for thoughtful design that keeps users coming back.

Thoughtful design that anticipates the needs of your users keeps them coming back for more. But it can't be built in a day.

It takes a constant focus on continuous improvement -- from initial research that uncovers the needs of both users and the business, to creating and iterating on solutions to find what works best. There's no shortcut past that process, but there is a clear path through it.
